The Start of My Adventures in AGNR

Welcome to my blog, where I share the adventures of my journey in AGNR. As a newcomer to AGNR, the university, and the state, I have much to learn. I am eager to get to know the AGNR programs and people, our partners, Maryland agriculture, and the natural resources of the state. During my first month as dean, I have been repeatedly surprised and impressed with conversations and collaborations and what I have experienced is just the beginning of what I know is much more to come. This blog is my way of sharing the journey with you and helping me get my thoughts out. Feel free to reach out and share your comments and reactions. And if you have good news I can help share, I am a willing partner.

My calendar is starting to fill a bit as I (hopefully) wrap up the paperwork and training associated with onboarding and get out of the office. This week I headed to the Central Maryland Research and Extension Center (CMREC) in Upper Marlboro for an evening tour of crops research. This was my third REC visit (Western Maryland REC and the Wye REC last week) and my first twilight tour, having missed the one the week before last. I was also in Howard County for the Ag Leadership luncheon.

I have several 1:1 meetings this week with AGNR leaders and some preparation work to do in advance of next week’s meeting with the Provost’s team for the annual AGNR meeting. Members of the AGNR leadership team have done the heavy lifting to prepare. I am fortunate to work with a highly competent team!

Slowly, I am learning about the committee work of the AGNR dean. Last week the Hughes Center board met at the Wye REC. The state Nutrient Management Program Committee meeting was rescheduled and may occur this week. Also, this week the Governor’s Council on the Chesapeake and Coastal Bays Watershed meets. I am interested to learn more about how this restructured group works together to accelerate restoration projects in the Chesapeake Bay and coastal areas.

I like to stay very busy. This week’s calendar, coupled with the start of conversations to build new partnerships, indicates I won’t have any trouble staying busy between now and when I check in with my next post.
