Joanna Goger has been named the new director of the Environmental Science & Policy (ENSP) program at the University of Maryland.
Goger first started teaching in the ENSP program in 2003 and has been a full time member of its teaching faculty for the past 15 years. She is currently a principal lecturer in the program and also co-directs the Sustainability Studies Minor, which is administered by the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources in partnership with the School of Public Policy.
Goger teaches law and policy courses within ENSP. For her teaching, she was awarded the Provost’s Excellence Award for PTK faculty in 2021 and was named the Gemstone Honors Program Mentor of the Year for the class of 2020. Goger helped lead the redesign of the Capstone course in ENSP and was part of the team that launched ENSP’s latest specialization in environmental justice. She also devotes considerable time to mentoring students interested in careers that intersect with law and policy.
At the campus and college level, Goger regularly serves on committees involving curriculum development, strategic initiatives, and promotion of PTK faculty.
Before beginning her teaching career, Goger worked as a trial attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Environment and Natural Resources Division and served as a law clerk to U.S. District Judge Frederic N. Smalkin.
Goger holds a Juris Doctor degree from the Carey School of Law at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and a Bachelor of Arts in history from Duke University.
