The Maryland General Assembly passed the Water Quality Improvement Act (WQIA) of 1998 during the closing hours of the recent session. The WQIA has been described as the most comprehensive farm nutrient control legislation in the country. What is it? Why was it passed? What does it do and what doesn't it do? How should farmers and others who will be regulated under the Act be involved and prepared to operate successfully under the WQIA? Complete answers to these important questions will evolve as regulations are developed. Brief updates will be published quarterly as regulations and programs are developed. Check your local Maryland Cooperative Extension office for more information.
