GREENHOUSE MANAGER
Exempt Staff, Regular Full-Time
Position Number 103103


Location:

Department of Plant Science & Landscape Architecture

Responsibilities:
The purpose of this position is to manage the day-to-day functions of the Research Greenhouse Complex at the University of Maryland. The incumbent shall be responsible for maintenance of research plant material grown in the facility. Responsibilities of this position include, but may not be limited to:
  • Managing all greenhouse-related operations
  • Plant Care
  • Controlling Greenhouse Environment-ensure that all environmental controls are set according to researchers’ requests
  • Greenhouse Functions-ensure all Environmental Controls of the greenhouse are functioning and report maintenance and repair needs to the Facilities
  • Manager Materials & Supply Management-Update inventory on all necessary supplies, tools, and equipment-Purchase greenhouse products and maintain all records and receipts from those purchases.
  • Communication/Networking-communicate researchers’ needs to all Greenhouse employees-accommodate visitors, guests, dignitaries, etc.
  • Allocating Space within the Greenhouse.
  • Personnel Management-Supervise and approve Agriculture Technician Supervisor and student workers. Schedule adequate coverage for all shifts.
  • Conduct Worker Protection Training with all new greenhouse employees.
  • Greenhouse Sanitation-manage and enforce proper greenhouse cleanliness and organization of common areas
Qualifications:

Required –

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Horticulture or related field.
  • A minimum of 2 years of greenhouse production experience in propagation and scheduling/finishing plant material.
  • Use of forklift when needed (must obtain training through the University first).
  • Ability to work at least one weekend per month (8:00am-12:00pm both weekend days).
  • Use of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access and Microsoft Word on a regular basis.
  • Exceptional numerical, organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage priorities and create strong working relations with other departments..
Preferred –
  • Pest scouting skills and experience.
  • Experience with automated greenhouse controls (Priva, Wadsworth, or similar systems).
  • Pesticide Applicator License (to be obtained within the first couple of months on job if the candidate does not already have this) and experience managing a greenhouse staff is highly.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary will be commensurate with experience.  The University of Maryland offers an extensive benefits package.
