Integrating Physical Activity into Nutrition Programming for Youth

In 1998-99, EFNEP youth educators delivered nutrition education programs to 9,141 youth in conjunction with

  • In School Programs
  • After School Programs
  • Summer Programs
  • Year Long Programs

In 1998-99, EFNEP youth educators delivered nutrition education programs to 9,141 youth in 11 Maryland counties and the city of Baltimore.

EFNEP Youth Message

  • Be Active - Have Fun
  • Snack the Pyramid Way
  • Read Labels
  • Eat 5 Fruits and Vegetables each day
  • Drink water, 1% milk or skim milk, 100% juice
  • Juice drinks and soda are 'sometimes foods'

As a result of participating in EFNEP

  • 73% of youth now eat a variety of foods
  • 68% of youth increased knowledge of the essentials of human nutrition
  • 69% of youth increased their ability to select low-cost, nutritious foods
  • 60% of youth improved practices in food reparation and safety

Evaluation

  • Eat more often from the bottom of the pyramid
  • Eat less often from the top of the pyramid
