EFNEP Success Stories

Submitted by Extension Nutrition Assistant,
Margaret Wetzel - Washington County

Facilitated discussion is a nutrition education technique designed for group instruction. The nutrition educator serves as a facilitator who moderates a conversation-style discussion among the group. The role of the facilitator is to keep the discussion going without dominating the group. Well, that can be very challenging sometimes. One day when I was teaching a class at WIC about "Growing Your Own Vegetables", one of my EFNEP homemakers came in and sat down beside me. I looked over and asked her if she would like to tell the group about her herb garden. She started sharing her knowledge and experiences with planning and growing a herb garden. When the class was over she looked at me and said "I can't believe I did that!" Facilitated discussion is a good thing.
