EFNEP Success Stories

Submitted by Extension Nutrition Assistant,
Ethel Thomas - St. Mary's County

"In June I visited several ladies who live in the local Amish communities. I took them recipes and told them about making the Master Mix. They bake a lot and appreciated the recipes. They were very glad to have the one basic mix and said ‘their job would be a lot easier'.

On the next visit we discussed anemia. This is a health problem for them. We talked about food sources for iron, encouraged the pregnant women to take the vitamins given them by the doctor. The men also listened to the information I gave them.

We also began talking about food safety by talking about the dangers of buying and using dented and banged-up cans. They had no idea that there was anything wrong with using them. I will be giving them more information and discussing this further."
