EFNEP Success Stories

Submitted by Extension Nutrition Assistant,
Jeanette Morgan - Somerset County

This homemaker is, in my opinion, a success story. She had completed one year of college when her first child was born. After the birth of this child she took a part-time job to supplement the family income. About this time I enrolled her in the EFNEP program and found her ready to learn everything she could about nutrition. She always mentioned her dream to finish college and teach special education. Frankly, I did not see this in her future. By then she was pregnant with her second child, but she never gave up on her goal. She graduated from the EFNEP program, but I would continue to see her at the WIC voucher pick-ups and at the supermarket. Every time I saw her she told me about her family, her plans and their future. She informed me that her family was completed with the birth of her third child, a son. She still worked part-time and told me that her husband was her strongest supporter. He kept the children at night so she could return to college. I saw her again recently and she was happy to report that she will graduate from UMES in May 1999 with a degree in Special Education.

Another thing I enjoyed about her is every time I saw her she talked about EFNEP and the help she received as a young mother.
