EFNEP Success Stories

Submitted by Extension Nutrition Assistant,
Elizabeth Hutchings - Anne Arundel County

Mrs. M. has five children and has learned a lot of nutrition ideas from our program. She shops better and eats breakfast. She has cut back on the fat in her diet and makes sure her children eat snacks that are good for them. The children help pick out the fruits and vegetables from the food program we have. They have learned about what fruits and vegetables will do for their health.

Ms. E. needed help with shopping from the start. She never had enough food to last through the month and had to get aid monthly. Her children had colds frequently. Working with food budgeting, using TV video sessions and comparison shopping corrected the problem. Suggesting finger foods on a plate in the refrigerator that the little ones could eat at their leisure helped the problem of colds and sickness also.

Ms. H. is a teenage homemaker with one son and is expecting again. When I met her, she didn't cook or eat home cooked meals. This, I explained, was very expensive. I took her recipes to get an idea of what foods she would try, and I made a list of foods she already tried. I helped her prepare new meals and stressed the food guide and why it was important. As a result of the visits and the need to eat right during pregnancy, the homemaker now:

  • shops using a list
  • uses the food guide when preparing meals
  • eats fast foods infrequently
  • has a variety of meals including fruits and vegetables
