1997 4-H SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM SUCCESS STORIES

Submitted by Extension Program Assistant,
Carolyn Gray - Calvert County

The theme of the 1997 4-H Day Camp was "Go 4 It". In our EFNEP class we stressed "Go 4 It" in terms of eating foods from all five food groups and the totals in the daily food guide. Recipes were used to include all the food groups.

Listed below are the lessons taught and the demonstrations or work sessions for each day:

  • Monday - Safe Food Surfing (Hand Washing Techniques)
  • Tuesday - Fruits in Your Diet (Fresh Fruit Salad)
  • Wednesday - Meats, Vegetables and Grains (Skillet Fiesta)
  • Thursday - Dairy and Fats (Ice Cream)
  • Friday - Serving Sizes (Food Replicas) Nutrients and Water Facts

One of our campers did not want to sample the "Skillet Fiesta" dish which consisted of a variety of foods. She did request, however, a copy of the recipe for her mother. As she watched the other children sample this recipe and keeping an eye on the quantity left, she finally asked if she could have a small portion. She first just pushed it around on her plate and then took a bite. Looking around to see if anyone was watching her, she soon ate it all. She admitted she liked the "Skillet Fiesta" and asked if there was any more.

This made me very happy that she had tried a new food and liked it.
