EFNEP Success Stories

Submitted by Extension Nutrition Assistant,
Constance Elam - Baltimore City

Recently I encountered a former homemaker while she was shopping with her granddaughter. She was enrolled in the program 15 years ago with her daughter, who was a new mother. The daughter was the focus of a front page feature article, along with a picture in the Baltimore Sun. Together with her mother and other members of their EFNEP group, they formed a Homemakers Club.

With much excitement the homemaker told her granddaughter about the demonstrations I had conducted for her EFNEP group and the newspaper article about her mother. Then with a change in her mood, the former homemaker told me that she would soon be a great grandmother, and asked if I would enroll her granddaughter in EFNEP and teach her what she had learned so many years ago. She has tried to share information about nutrition, cooking and shopping tips, but the teenager is like so many other teenagers - she thinks she knows everything and will not listen to her grandmother. The former homemaker was very concerned about her granddaughter's pregnancy and the health and well-being of the baby. I agreed and I planned to teach the first lesson on the proper feeding of the baby with some parenting tips.

Wish me luck! Teenagers today are a different breed from the teens 15 years ago.
