EFNEP Success Stories

Submitted by Extension Nutrition Assistant,
Carrie Davis - Baltimore City

One young mother of three children (preschool to 10 years old) was enrolled in an EFNEP group composed of project independence recipients in the Cherry Hill community. With the goal to become fully employed, the woman had voiced her need to know how to balance her potential work life and that of providing healthy and nutritional meals for her family.

The EFNEP homemaker felt the lessons that helped her the most included planning weekly menus which help prevent overspending at the grocery store and knowing in advance "what's for dinner"; knowing what basic staples to keep on hand and use what is on hand instead of constantly going to the store; knowing what healthy snacks to have on hand for the children and, how to organize her kitchen. The young mother is very satisfied that she now uses new and economical recipes and can prepare foods from scratch.

I am delighted that my job affords me the opportunity to interact with parents from many different backgrounds, and am able to help with their nutritional needs while on a limited budget. I strongly feel that the young mother will do quite well in the work force and in providing the proper nourishment for her family.
