What is
the Maryland Cooperative Extension?
The Maryland Cooperative Extension is a statewide, informal education
system within the College of Agriculture
and Natural Resources at the University of Maryland College
Park and the University of Maryland Eastern
Shore.
Where
is the Maryland Cooperative Extension Located?
Extension's administrative offices are located at the University of Maryland,
College Park. The dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources,
Thomas A. Fretz, is the director
of the Extension Service.
County Extension
offices are located in each of Maryland's
23 counties and Baltimore City. These offices are staffed by Extension
faculty who are supported by subject matter specialists based at the College
Park and Eastern Shore campuses, the Center for Environmental and Estuarine
Studies, the Maryland 4-H
Center, the Home and Garden Information
Center, and four area Research and Education Centers.
The Institute
for Governmental Service, a unit of the Cooperative Extension Service,
is housed at the College Park campus. The Institute provides specialized
services to local governments and businesses. [Top

Programs
Educational programs and problem-solving assistance available to citizens
are based on the research and experience of land-grant universities such
as the University of Maryland, College Park. Extension services are part
of a cooperative State, Federal, and local partnership. Extension is supported
by the Federal government, research from and programs from other universities,
and a nationwide network of county offices.
Programs
are developed by Extension faculty, regional personnel, subject matter
specialists, and clientele in response to citizens' needs. [Top
