Welcome to Maryland!

On behalf of the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources and the University of Maryland’s two Land-Grant Institutions, in College Park and on the Eastern Shore, we are pleased to welcome you to the state of Maryland and to Baltimore’s beautiful Inner Harbor for the 2009 National Extension and Research Administrative Officers’ Conference.

It is very fitting that you meet here in the city on the water to explore the theme “Navigating Change in Partnership & Compliance.” You are a critical group. We rely heavily upon you, our administrative officers, to navigate our land-grant colleges and universities through the intricacies of state and federal funding guidelines to ensure our compliance. Through this great partnership of land-grant universities, we are able to collectively make significant contributions all across our nation through our mission of teaching, research, and extension.

We hope you enjoy the conference, learn a lot, and develop good networks with your counterparts from other universities. But, we also hope you’ll take this opportunity to enjoy all that Baltimore has to offer, and be sure to sample Maryland’s seafood! Maryland is for Crabs became an official tourism slogan of the State in 1989 when the Callinectes sapidus (blue crab) became Maryland's "State Crustacean." Also, in the area just outside the National Aquarium, pause a minute to enjoy the exhibits and learn about the Chesapeake Bay and efforts being made to protect it.

Enjoy your stay in Maryland and return to visit again in the future!
