Horticulture -- Home & Garden

Frederick County has an active Horticulture and Master Gardener  program , assisting county residents and businesses with  horticultural questions and home pest issues.  We provide information on trees, shrubs, perennials, herbs, lawns, vegetables, fruit, insects, diseases, wildlife and household pests.  We welcome visitors to come in with questions, call or e-mail; to visit with Master Gardeners at Plant Clinics held during the growing season at Baughman's Lane and periodically at Ft. Detrick, and at the Great Frederick Fair, as well as other public events.  We publish newspaper articles, provide speakers for community groups, teach classes, conduct Bay-Wise site visits and work with community groups seeking landscaping guidance.

Master Gardeners are very active in the community, assisting thousands of county residents through Open Houses at the Demonstration Garden, an annual Seminar Series,  a Speakers Bureau, Plant Clinics,  the Great Frederick Fair, a Junior Master Gardener Program, Therapeutic Horticulture and the PAL Program (the Police Activity League for youth) and public participation in monthly programs.  About twenty volunteers receive training annually with a mission to educate Maryland residents about safe, effective and sustainable horticultural practices that build healthy gardens, landscapes and communities.

The Frederick County Master Gardeners also reach the public through their bi-weekly newspaper column in the Frederick News-Post and their internet website. They are the only Master Gardener program in the state of Maryland to have their own newspaper column, and are becoming highly visible, well known representatives of the University of Maryland Extension.   For more information about the Master Gardener Program, visit the Frederick County Master Gardener Homepage

FREDERICK COUNTY MASTER GARDENER'S PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION GARDENS
University of Maryland Extension's Frederick County Office building at 330 Montevue Lane, in Frederick has public Demonstration Gardens. The purpose of the Demonstration Gardens is to provide a hands-on type learning site for future horticultural workshops and classes. In addition, the gardens will allow residents to see how plants grow and look through all seasons in our county. It is our hope that the gardens will be of interest and benefit to all who visit them. Display gardens include vegetable, fruit, herb, perennials for sun and shade, a wildlife habitat garden, a native hedgerow,  and  a composting  area. The vegetable gardens include raised bed areas (20" high) that allow easy access for elderly and handicapped gardeners. These plots are managed using  an integrated pest management gardening approach.
