AND ANNE WHISMAN MEMORIAL GARDEN |
![]() |
Tucked back between Church and Duke Streets, the Phillips House is a leafy haven in the heart of Prince Frederick. Dating to the early twentieth century, the house is named for Emerson and Mary Phillips, who bought the property in 1949 and lived there for many years. In 1993, the house and surrounding acreage was donated to Calvert County by Boyd King, and the adjacent park is named for him. Anne Whisman was a long-time supporter of Calvert County's historic heritage. She was the editor of Calvert County Life and a columnist for the Calvert Recorder. Working closely with the Calvert County Historical Society, she often wrote about the importance of preserving the county's historic homes, particularly the Phillips House. Through her efforts, funds were procured to restore this historic property, and it is now listed with the Maryland Historical Trust. When Whisman died in 2003, the Calvert County Master Gardeners sought to honor her with the creation of a garden at the Phillips House. After a plan was submitted to the County Board of Commissioners, work began with the planting of daffodil bulbs in November of that year. The following spring, a garden of native trees, shrubs, and perennials was laid out and began to take root. Benches, rocks, and a bird bath have subsequently been installed to provide visitors to the Anne Whisman Memorial Garden ample opportunity to enjoy the historic setting. From season to season, the county Master Gardeners tend the garden in a way that honors the memory of Anne Whisman and enhances the experience of those who use the Phillips House or visit the grounds.
The Anne Whisman Memorial Garden, at the Phillips House, is located at 28 Duke Street, behind the Calvert County Community Resources Building parking lot. Parking is available at the Phillips House. The garden is open daily to the public during daylight hours.

Bay-Wise certification of the CRE community garden |

The Calvert County Master Gardeners are committed to working with individual communities throughout the County to encourage new vegetable garden enterprises as well as to help support established gardens.
Available to assist with organizing, teaching techniques, and collaborating on resources, Master Gardeners have provided organizational support and technical assistance to residents of the Chesapeake Ranch Estates (CRE) when they became interested in creating a community garden of their own.
Located near Lusby, the CRE Community Garden was the first, and continues to be the most extensive, community vegetable garden in the county. Initially an unimproved community plot of approximately ten acres, this exciting garden project now boasts over forty individual, fenced garden plots, averaging 125' by 125'. Ongoing membership averages sixty gardeners who pay an annual fee of $20 for plot rental, access to water, and some site maintenance of the common areas. Gardeners design and maintain their individual garden plots.
The CRE Garden Club meets regularly to discuss such topics as gardening with containers, the most effective approach to creating productive raised beds, planting and harvesting times, conservation, resource protection, and numerous other gardening topics of interest. CCMGs, especially those who live in the Ranch Estates, often lead discussions and provide informational talks. The Community Garden has been so successful that members hold and supply their own community farmers' market each Saturday morning during the growing season. The members further share their bounty by donating excess produce to the Southern Pines Senior Center.
Tours of this innovative community garden are available by appointment.

AT SOUTHERN PINES SENIOR CENTER |

Can you think of a more relaxing way to spend a summer’s day than sitting quietly in your colorful garden, watching butterflies flit effortlessly from blossom to blossom? Plant to meet their needs (food, water, shelter, and a place for their young to develop), and they will come.
For inspiration on how much can be accomplished on once-neglected ground, visit the Garden at Southern Pines Senior Center. This Garden began as a Master Gardener intern project in 2005. An unplanted area adjacent to a covered patio provided the perfect place to bring color, fragrance, relaxation, and life to an overlooked spot. Master Gardeners and senior citizens worked side by side in the design of the garden. With help from the County, the site was tilled, handicapped sidewalks were created, benches were installed, and LOTS of butterfly-friendly plants were positioned. Spring now brings an explosion of plant color and enjoyment (nearly 1600 square feet of it!!), along with a large variety of “winged flowers” – the butterflies and hummingbirds.
Visit the Garden, located at the back of the Southern Pines Senior Center, 20 Appeal Lane, in Lusby. See how many butterflies you can spot. The Garden is open daily dawn to dusk.

JEFFERSON PATTERSON PARK HISTORIC RESTORATION GARDENS

Petersons Point at Jefferson Patterson Park |

In 1937, when asked why he chose to move to Calvert County, Mr. Jefferson Patterson told the Calvert Gazette, “ … I fancied the rich and varied vegetation of the country where the trees and shrubs of North and South grow in harmony and beauty and where the growing season is so long that even the winter … seems only a restful interlude…”
In 2002, the Patterson’s lovely 512-acre Point Farm property was turned over to the state of Maryland to become the Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum (JPPM). The historic Point Farm gardens were designed by landscape architects Rose Greely and Cary Mulholland. After the original drawings were discovered, the Calvert County Master Gardeners undertook the ambitious project of restoring these beautiful gardens to their original design.
There are many activities currently underway to restore these once beautiful gardens to their original splendor. Pruning and rehabilitating the plantings, freeing the grapevine fence that borders the garden from the pokeberry that had overtaken the area, clearing the rock walls that formed the terraced flower and vegetable garden beds, and repairing the greenhouse and the cold frames are just a few of the many projects for which volunteer help is needed. In addition to gardening activities, volunteers with an expertise in bricklaying and glazing are needed to assist with the greenhouse and cold frame restoration.
Calvert County Master Gardeners and community volunteers gather on the first Saturday of each month and work from 9:00 am until noon. Partners who are helping with the restoration of the garden include the Friends of JPPM, the Girl and Boy Scouts, the Chesapeake Garden club, and individual families. Periodically, guest experts offer demonstrations and instructional clinics during these Saturday morning work sessions to teach volunteers more about various aspects of gardening.
Funds in support of restoration activities are currently limited and donations are welcome. Each December, the Master Gardeners hold a holiday wreath making workshop and teach participants how to make beautiful holiday wreaths using the historical plant material from the garden. Once restored, the greenhouse and cold frames will provide space for plant starts propagated from the historical specimens. These starts will be made available to the public as part of the garden’s fund raising efforts.
The JPMP is located in southern Calvert County approximately seven miles north of Solomons Island off Parran Road, west of Route 4. You can learn more about the park, its hours of operation and its many activities at http://www.jefpat.org/.
