International Studies

When considering international studies, all students should consult with the Study Abroad Office located in 1101 Holzapfel Hall as part of the planning process.


Certificate in International Agriculture and Natural Resources


The Certificate in International Agriculture and Natural Resources is designed to supplement student programs in majors in related disciplines. The required courses focus on:

  • Language Instruction
  • International Aspects of the Environment
  • Agricultural Production, development and sustainability
  • Nutrition
  • Business
  • An Experience Abroad, as well as a capstone course regarding the student’s travel abroad.

The certificate requires at least 21 credits which may include courses taken toward other degree and CORE requirements.

Upon successful completion of the courses, with a grade of C or better in each course and a recommendation of the Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, a certificate will be awarded. A notation of the award of the certificate will be included on the student’s transcript. In order to receive the certificate, students must have completed all requirements for a bachelor’s degree.

    6-8 credits in a foreign language
  2. International Courses *

    At least 9 credits from the following list of courses, at least 3 of these courses must be in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources for students majoring in a program outside of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources:

    • *AREC 433 - Food and Agricultural Policy
    • *AREC 445 - Agricultural Development, Population Growth, and the Environment
    • *BMGT 390 - Competing on Quality in a Global Economy
    • *BMGT 392 - Introduction to International Business Management
    • *ECON 315 - Economic Development of Undeveloped Areas
    • *ECON 340 - International Economics
    • *GEOG 330- Cultural Geography
    • *GVPT 306 - Global Ecopolitics
    • *NFSC 425 - International Nutrition
    • ENST 440 - Crops, Soils, and Civilization
    • ENST 100 - International Crop Production- Issues and Challenges in the 21st Century

    *These courses have at least one prerequisite. Please plan your schedule accordingly.

Students in Belize study ecosystems, culture and economy as part of the travel abroad requirement for the certificate in International Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Travel Study or Travel Abroad

  • You will earn 3-4 credits of travel study or study abroad
    Prerequisite: Foreign Language Course Work.
    Prerequisite or co-requisite: Six credits from the International Courses List.
  • In order to qualify for the certificate, travel study and study abroad experiences require prior approval of Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
  • For approval, travel experience must demonstrate significant learning opportunities in areas related to agriculture and natural resources and cultural immersion.

Students in Belize study the ecosystems, culture, and economy as part of their study abroad program.



Travel Study Seminar

  • 1 credit Travel Study Seminar.
    Prerequisite: Completion of the travel study requirement.
  • Students are required to make a presentation of their travel experience including: a paper, a poster presentation, and an oral presentation with discussion.
