Description: Description of Organization: Pueblo a Pueblos is a non-profit organization creating lasting change for children in the Lake Atitlan region of Guatemala. The School Garden Project works with children and families at risk of food insecurity and threats to their livelihoods. Our goal is to protect, recover, and grow families’ assets so that children thrive in food secure and economically viable households.
General Description of Role: We are seeking a motivated intern to work in our School Garden Program. Through this program, we work with indigenous Guatemalan children to create organic food gardens at their schools and provide supplies and ongoing garden mentoring for participants and their families. The School Garden intern will work with local elementary schools to bring gardening programs into the classroom; educating children on the joys of gardening through organic gardening, basic nutrition, vermicomposting, and other gardening activities. In addition to participating in installations, tasks may include: *Development and preparation of an elementary level school gardening curriculum *Construction of garden boxes and trellises *Mentoring program participants in gardening techniques *Providing "add-on" services for participants, such as compost bins, worm bins, or medicinal herb beds.
The start and end dates for this internship are flexible, but it will last a minimum of 3-6 months and require 20-25 hours per week. While the internship is unpaid, we are happy to work with your educational institution in order to provide school credits and assist in locating appropriate housing.
