Description: Monocacy National Battlefield Monocacy National Battlefield encompasses 1,647 acres of farmland, forest and riparian areas south of the City of Frederick in the Monocacy River valley in central Maryland. Established for its historic significance as "the Battle that Saved Washington D.C.", the park contains working farms to preserve the historic landscape. It also contains approximately 500 documented plants, with some state-listed species, and numerous wildlife including: white-tail deer, wild turkey, red fox, coyote, red-tail and red-shoulder hawks, as well as many songbirds. The Monocacy River, a State Scenic River, runs directly through the park for approximately 2 miles, offering recreational opportunities for kayakers, canoeists and bird watchers. Manage exotic plant and vegetation; monitor water quality; rehabilitate cultural landscape; work with GPS and GIS; assist with wildlife management and monitoring; assist in establishing an environmental education program to create a working framework for its eventual implementation; conduct research and provide data collection; assist with document writing, researching appropriate educational curricula and developing programs to give to a wide variety of audiences.
