Qualifications: Required Skills: US citizenship; valid driver`s license; ability and willingness to undergo a required criminal history background check; excellent computer skills, including MS Office Suite and graphics software such as Photoshop; good writing and communication skills; good physical condition to perform outdoor work; ability to lead large groups. Desired Skills: Ability to drive a manual transmission vehicles; ability to work independently and problem solve before seeking assistance; time management skills; project management experience; trail maintenance experience.
Description: The C&O Canal starts in the historic neighborhood of Georgetown, located in Washington DC, and winds its way for the next 185 miles along the Potomac River to Cumberland MD located in the mountains of Western Maryland. The park is long and linear and follows the Potomac River. It contains a dirt towpath that was once used by mules to pull canal boats. The path is now an internationally known bike and hiking path that is used by more then 2 million visitors per year interested in history nature and recreation. Over 1,300 historic structures such as aqueducts, lockhouses, locks, bridges etc. dot the park and are waiting to be explored. Recreational opportunities abound from fishing, camping, jogging, hiking, cycling, birdwatching, canoeing and some of the best whitewater kayaking and canoeing in the Eastern United States. Assist with management of one of the largest volunteer programs in the NPS system by leading volunteer service projects, recruiting volunteers, developing new ways to use volunteers, organizing recognition events, and providing overall support for the entire program.
