Description: UNDERSTANDING JBS INTERNATIONAL, INC: JBS is a women's owned company that works with the private sector and national and international government customers. JBS provides knowledge management and diffusion services including research, program assessment and evaluation, program design and implementation, product development and multi-channel knowledge dissemination. The internship will occur at JBS's headquarters, located at 5515 Security Lane, Suite 800, North Bethesda, MD 20852

ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES: This assignment includes a experienced and nationally recognized supervisor. The internship can be used for academic credit. JBS International provides a comprehensive rotation through a tremendously positive learning experience resulting in an understanding of persons with disabilities from a for-profit public health and human services perspective including one or more of the following topic areas: * Accessibility: Ensuring all JBS reports, physical access, electronic communications, etc. comply with accessibility federal standards on behalf of persons with disabilities. * Behavioral Health Parity: Supporting state governments in preparing for the impact of the recently signed Behavioral Health Parity law to go into effect in 2010. * Co-occurring Conditions: Addressing the complex and special needs of youth and adults with multiple disabilities including co-occurring developmental disabilities and emotional disorders/substance abuse. * Electronic Health Information: Addressing the challenges persons with disabilities experience as the nation's medical facilities and providers rely on electronic medical records and supporting personal health record. * Emergency Preparedness - Ensuring persons with disabilities across the lifespan are included in federal, state and local emergency preparedness and response plans and activities. * Employment: Addressing employment-funding opportunities for persons with disabilities. * Health Accessibility: Developing proposals and strategies in support of the 2005 " Surgeon General's Call to Action to Improve the Health and Wellness of Perons with Disabilities" to ensure persons with disability can access health wellness services. * Minority Health: Addressing special needs of persons from under-represented minorities. * Traumatic Brain Injury: Enhancing the role of the private sector (corporations, foundations and individuals) in addressing the nation's public sector traumatic brain injury (TBI) rehabilitation service systems on behalf of the nation's service members and civilians who have incurred a TBI. * Young Adult: Supporting the special needs of young adults (14-30 years) in transition. _______________________________ Objective 1: Represent JBS International at Congressional policy-based hearings/meetings. Represent JBS at local Congressional and other policy based federal and non governmental meetings on issues such as TBI, general persons with disabilities topic areas, employment, and those that are health and human services related. Outcome: Gain experience in working within a for-profit organization approach to disability-based policy development across all life domains and in understanding the interface between provider organizations, Congress and the administrative branches of government.

Objective 2: Team member on JBS disability-based planning committees. Serve as an essential team member (or, depending on the project, act a project leader) with the Disability Division Director and/or staff on planning committees addressing proposal submissions, education/training program on a disability related topic, and other supporting JBS related services related to persons with disabilities across the lifespan. Outcome: Obtain hands on experience in developing and implementing disability-based public health proposals, training modules and information-based meetings.

Objective 3: Assist in developing and implementing new business to enhance JBS business opportunities. Assist in developing and implementing new JBS disability-based business opportunities to support the JBS mission on such domains as transportation, education, TBI, assistive technology, housing, health, employment, and integrated services as they support the challenges of helping persons with disabilities effectively reside in the community. Outcome: Obtain hands on experience in understanding the importance of addressing the comprehensive needs of persons with disabilities.

Object 4: Work with high-level executives. Outcome: Gain experience in understanding the roles of top level JBS administrators in shaping and carrying out disability-based programs and business opportunities.

Object 5: Help carry out JBS contracted constituent meetings of national significance. Outcome: Understand from hands on experiences the importance of including constituent input in all levels of policy and program development.
