UMD AG DAY 1998

Theme: “Agriculture through the Ages”
Dedication: Jordan Thomas
The Agriculture and Natural Resources Student Council dedicates the 73 rd Annual Ag Day to our campus Farm Manager, Mr. Jordan Thomas.
Jordan has been working for the University of Maryland for 24 years. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree in Dairy Science and began working in the dairy here at Maryland. After the dairy was shut down in 1987, he started working at the campus farm. He not only manages the farm, but is involved in many other activities. He is a member of the Agricultural Alumni Chapter, Chair of the Staff Affairs committee of the College Park Senate, and elected Senator Representative of the Technical Staff.
Jordan is always visible on campus and is known by many of the students, especially those who have taken Animal Science courses. In ANSC489, Jordan instructs the students in the sheep portion of the class. Here he helps students get hands-on experience with sheep and lams. He also helps organize the livestock shows for Ag Day and is always around to lend a helping hand.
Jordan, we would like to thank you for all of your hard work and dedication that you have given to the college in the past 24 years. To show our appreciation, we are dedicating our Ag Day to you.
Dedication: Dr. Ronald J. Seibel
For thirty years, Dr. Ronald J. Seibel has been at the University of Maryland enriching the lives of countless students. During that time, his commitment to agricultural students at the University and in the sate of Maryland was reflected in his contributions to such organizations as the Future Farmers of America, Alpha Zeta Fraternity, Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society, and his direction of the Institute of Applied Agriculture.
In July 1968, Dr. Seibel started his career at the University as an instructor. Four years later he completed his Doctoral degree in Agricultural Education to which he would devote himself to at the University of Maryland. Since 1972, Dr. Seibel has first served as Acting Director and subsequently Director of the Institute of Applied Agriculture, the University of Maryland’s two-year agriculture program. He has served as an Assistant Dean in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources for ten years.
Since 1979, Dr. Seibel has been advisor of the Maryland chapter of Alpha Zeta Fraternity, the professional fraternity of agriculture. His dedication and service to AZ has been second to none. During his twenty-year involvement with AZ, he also served on the Executive Board of the National AZ Fraternity. AT the most recent National AZ Conclave, the student chapter was honored for outstanding achievement in four areas, as a direct result of his guidance. Dr. Seibel was acknowledged also as one of 100 Centennial AZ Honorees for his contributions to Agriculture.
During his tenure at the University of Maryland, thousands of students have benefited from Dr. Seibel’s enduring commitment to both agriculture and education with the goal of developing agricultural leaders for the future. After three decades of dedication, we will be losing Dr. Seibel to retirement, but we can be assured that his devotion to agriculture will endure. We wish you luck in your future endeavors.
Dr. Don Schlimme – In Appreciation for 18 Years of Service

Dr. Don Schlimme is no stranger to the University of Maryland. In September of 1952 he stepped on campus as a freshman and now in May of 1998 he will finally leave the university for good. It is because of all the time he has dedicated to this university that we would like to thank him.
However, it is more than just his time that he has given. His constant encouragement and reminders to “just hang in there” have been inspirational and motivating for many students throughout the years. His colorful stories always provided entertainment, but more importantly, they always had a valuable lesson attached. His willingness to share his knowledge and experience made him a valuable resource to students, faculty and staff. Through his participation in extension programs, he reached out to the rural community and offered them a way to bring science and agriculture together. It is these selfless acts which make him respected by all. It is for these reasons and many others that we are sad to say good-bye, but since we must we would like to say thank you for all that you have given the College of Agriculture, particularly the Department of Nutrition and Food Science. We will miss you very much and will always remember what you have taught us. Thank you for your time and dedication and may you catch large fish on the Susquehanna River for many years to come.
