UMD AG DAY 1997

Theme: “Sustainable Agriculture: Preserving our Natural Resources”
Dedication: Jerry V. DeBarthe Assistant Dean for Academic Programs September 21, 1938 – April 24, 1997Today, we honor the life of Jerry V. DeBarthe, a man who has touched many lives in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and at the University of Maryland at College Park.

In loving memory of
JERRY V. DEBARTHE
Educator, advisor, mentor, colleague, and friend
“Those who would leave an impression for a year plant rice, those who would leave an impression for 10 years plant a tree, but those who would leave an impression for 100 years educate a human being.”**********
The Agriculture Student Council dedicates the 72 nd Annual Ag Day of the University of Maryland college of Agriculture and Natural Resources to our former advisor, Dr. DeBarthe.Dr. DeBarthe, now the Assistant Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, served for many years as a professor in the Animal Sciences Department. More recently within the department, Dr. DeBarthe served as Undergraduate Coordinator. In this position, he was able to help many students throughout their undergraduate career. Despite the demands of an Undergraduate Coordinator, Dr. DeBarthe’s door was always open.
Along with his position in the Department of Animal Sciences, Dr. DeBarthe was also the advisor to the Agriculture Student Council. Again Dr. DeBarthe showed his endless dedication to the undergraduate student body within the college. For many years, the council was blessed with Dr. DeBarthe’s constant advice, guidance and support. Dr. DeBarthe’s success as advisor came through his ability to balance his interaction with the council and allowing them to work on their own.
Both as professor and advisor, Dr. DeBarthe encouraged students to reach for their goals and never settle for average work. When the rigors of being a student seemed too much, Dr. DeBarthe always offered advice to make the undergraduate career seem feasible. As well, Dr. DeBarthe spent many hours in career counseling for students not wishing to attend vet school. After many years of hard work and commitment to the students of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. DeBarthe is in a new role in the dean’s office where he is continuing to aid the students. This dedication is to show our appreciation of his time and effort with the Agriculture Student council and the Department of Animal Sciences.
