Ag Day Dedication: Dr. Paul H. Mazzocchi

Dr. Paul H. Mazzocchi came to the University of Maryland in 1967 as an Assistant Professor of chemistry. He has held several different positions in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, including chairmanship from 1982 to 1990. In 1989, Dr. Mazzocchi accepted the position of Acting Dean of the Colleges of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Dr. Mazzocchi immersed himself in the College of Agriculture and quickly turned his attention to the needs and concerns of the college’s students. He has been instrumental in the development of the AG FOCUS program to provide much needed practice l experience for students majoring in the many different areas of agriculture. Each year he has welcome students back to school at the annual “Welcome Back” picnic in September. He has been an eager and enthusiastic participant in the Faculty Swine show at Ag Day. He began a “Breakfast with the Dean” program, where students could meet with him to discuss problems, concerns, or their general impressions of how things were going. These are only some examples of the numerous steps Dr. Mazzocchi has taken to ensure that he is in touch with the lives and educations of his students.

Dr. Mazzocchi’s intense involvement with the students of the College of Agriculture led to his induction into the Agriculture Honors Fraternity of Alpha Zeta in April, 1992. That same year, he was also recognized by the Agriculture Student Council at their spring awards banquet for his “Outstanding Sportsmanship and Dedication to the Students of the College of Agriculture”.

In the fall of 1992, Dr. Mazzocchi was named Dean of the College of Life Sciences and is currently serving as Interim Dean of the College of Agriculture during the search for a permanent dean. Dr. Mazzocchi’s strong leadership during the past 4 years has helped improve and strengthen the programs of the College of Agriculture during a time when the University of Maryland was experiencing a great deal of uncertainty and upheaval. His presence in the Dean’s office will surely be missed by all of us in the College.

For his tremendous dedication to the College of Agriculture, its faculty, staff, and especially its students, we hereby dedicate the 1993 Agriculture Day to Dr. Paul H. Mazzocchi. We wish you the very best!

Livestock Judges

Bonnie Graves-Remsberg

Bonnie Graves Remsberg, our dairy cattle judge for this year, was raised on a registered Holstein farm in Morris, Connecticut. She received her B.S. degree in Animal Science from the University of Connecticut where she was a member of the Collegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Team and a member of the Alpha Zeta and Gamma Sigma Delta Fraternities. In 1981, Bonnie received her M.S. in Dairy Science from the University of Maryland. Following graduation, she accepted a position at Alfred Agricultural and Technical College in the Department of Plant and Animal Science. She was the coach of the Dairy Cattle Judging Team that won the National competition in Lubbock, Texas.

Bonnie taught agricultural courses at Frederick Community college and is presently owner and operator of Brook-Lodge Designs, handcut and pierced lamp shades. She is married to Thomas D. Remsberg, owner of Brook-Lodge Farms, Middletown, Maryland. They have two sons T.J. and Jarrett Renn.

Tommy Mullinix

Tommy Mullinix is currently the foreman of the Beef, Sheep and Small Animal Unity of the USDA Beltsville Area Research Center. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Maryland Sheep Breeders Association. Mr. Mullinix has spent 30 years raising Hampshire sheep and market lambs and in 1968 was the National Champion of the 4-H sheep judging contest.

Ken Bauer

Ken Bauer lives in Woodbine, Maryland with his wife Stacey and young son Kenny. Ken grew up raising swine on the family farm. He exhibited swine for 11 years as a Maryland 4-H contestant. Today, he still travels to many shows not only in Maryland, but across the country, showing his award winning swine. Ken graduated from Towson State University in 1986 and uses his business administration degree to run his farrow to finish swine breeding stock herd which consists of Poland China, Duroc, and Yorkshire breeds. Ken is the leader of the local 4-H Club and assistant superintendent of the swine department for the Carroll County 4-H and FFA Fair. His swine judging experience is extensive in Maryland and Pennsylvania.

William N. Gregg Jr.

William N. Gregg, Jr. of Woodfield, Maryland, is no stranger to the livestock business which makes him an easy choice for this year’s beef judge. He grew up raising registered Black Angus and Polled Hereford beef cattle, spotted hogs and market lambs for his 4-H and FFA projects.

Billy began judging livestock at the age of ten and participated in Meat Judging through FFA to enhance his skills. He was involved with judging as well as his own livestock projects on the local, state, and national level. In 1983, Billy was selected to represent the state of Maryland at the National FFA Meat Judging Contest at Kansas City, Missouri. In 1985, he was a member of the Maryland State “A” Livestock Judging team which represented the state in Louisville, Kentucky. Billy has judged several livestock shows in Maryland during the last several years and is looking forward to doing more.

Currently, Billy works on a 4,000 acre grain and dairy farm owned by C.T. Stanley and Sons, in Damascus, MD.

Agriculture Student Council

The Agriculture Student council is a service group consisting of representatives from all agricultural clubs at the University of Maryland. Its purposes are to coordinate activities of the member clubs, to promote agricultural public relations, and to establish and develop interaction among students, faculty, administrators and alumni. In addition, the Ag Student council promotes the welfare and betterment of physical conditions and academic programs on campus for agricultural students.

There are 11 campus agricultural clubs represented in the Ag Student Council. Two representatives are elected to serve from each student club and officers of the Council are elected to 1-year terms from among these representatives. This year’s Ag Student Council members are:
