UMD AG DAY 1992

Theme: Harvesting New Ideas
Ag Day Dedication: Norman Travis Martin
On September 8, 1955, the University of Maryland Agricultural Engineering Department hired a 17 year old kid to help out around the machine shop. He must have been pretty impressed with his $1,984.00 annual salary, because 37 years later he is still there. Norman Travis Martin ahs spent his whole adult life in the service of the University of Maryland. From his beginnings in a shop with nothing but a hammer and one electric hand drill, he has gone from Mechanical Handiman to Maintenance Mechanic to Research Assistant to Research Analyst to Model Maker to Instrument maker to Shop Supervisor to his current position as Engineering Technician Supervisor.
Born April 4, 1938 in the "Watermelon Capital of the World", Hope, Arkansas, Norman's family came to Maryland when he was 4 years old and settled in Beltsville, MD. He grew up in this area, hanging out at the Little Tavern and the Sidney Lust drive-in, where he met his future wife Virginia. They lived for a while on the University research farm in Upper Marlboro and hard four children; Sharon, Linda, Anne and Karen. They were later followed by three grand children; Melinda, Nina, and Andrew.
Norman has always been supportive of student activities and firmly believes in a principle which can be scarce on modern day campuses: "The University exists for the Students". Whether its loaning BBQ grills, cooking for club functions (including 1500 chicken halves for a Poultry Science meeting) or dispensing some of the knowledge that 37 years of experience brings, Norman is always thinking of "the kids".
In recognition of his devoted service, on June 11, 1986, Norman was given the title of "Tenured Professor of Agricultural Engineering". With great appreciation for help both past and present, the Agriculture Student Council would like to dedicate this program of the 67 th Annual Agriculture Day to Norman Travis Martin.

Livestock Judges
Bonnie Graves-Remsberg
Bonnie Graves Remsberg, our dairy cattle judge for this year, was raised on a registered Holstein farm in Morris, Connecticut. She received her B.S. degree in Animal Science from the University of Connecticut where she was a member of the Collegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Team and a member of the Alpha Zeta and Gamma Sigma Delta Fraternities. In 1981, Bonnie received her M.S. in Dairy Science from the University of Maryland. Following graduation, she accepted a position at Alfred Agricultural and Technical College in the Department of Plant and Animal Science. She was the coach of the Dairy Cattle Judging Team that won the National competition in Lubbock, Texas.
Bonnie taught agricultural courses at Frederick Community college and is presently owner and operator of Brook-Lodge Designs, handcut and pierced lamp shades. She is married to Thomas D. Remsberg, owner of Brook-Lodge Farms, Middletown, Maryland. They have two sons T.J. and Jarrett Renn.
George LechliderGeorge Lechlider is a familiar face to anyone involved in the swine industry. Mr. Lechlider was a full-time farmer for 40 years. Mr. Lechlider and his wife reside in Laytonsville, MD.
During that time he raised purebred Duroc and Yorkshire swine. Mr. Lechlider and his prize winning swine traveled to many shows across the United States. Many of his swine were also shipped overseas to several foreign countries. While he was showing his swine he also found time to judge other breeders swine in the shows across the country. Even though Mr. Lechlider has retired from farming, he still remains very active in the industry. Presently he is the President of the Montgomery County Farm Bureau, Vice President of the soil conservation District, and superintendent of the swine department at the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair. He also continues to judge swine shows across the United States. Mr. Lechlider has judged Ag Day competitions in previous years and we welcome his return to UMCP Ag Day 1992.
William N. Gregg Jr.
William N. Gregg, Jr. of Woodfield, Maryland, is no stranger to the livestock business which makes him an easy choice for this year';s beef judge. He grew up raising registered Black Angus and Polled Hereford beef cattle, spotted hogs and market lambs for his 4-H and FFA projects.
Billy began judging livestock at the age of ten and participated in Meat Judging through FFA to enhance his skills. He was involved with judging as well as his own livestock projects on the local, state, and national level. In 1983, Billy was selected to represent the state of Maryland at the National FFA Meat Judging Contest at Kansas City, Missouri. In 1985, he was a member of the Maryland State "A" Livestock Judging team which represented the state in Louisville, Kentucky. Billy has judged several livestock shows in Maryland during the last several years and is looking forward to doing more.
Currently, Billy works on a 4,000 acre grain and dairy farm owned by C.T. Stanley and Sons, in Damascus, MD.
Bobbye ChaneyBobbye Chaney comes from Mt. Airy, Maryland. Livestock has been a part of her life since she was a child. As a 4-Her in Carroll County, Bobbye showed sheep, swine and beef. She won numerous awards with her animals at the county and state levels. AS a 4-Her she was also an integral part to the county and state livestock judging teams. In 1990 she was on a state "A" team that represented Maryland in Louisville, Kentucky. During that same time period she was a member of the South Carroll High School FFA livestock judging team that represented Maryland in the National contest in Kansas City, Missouri. Presently, Bobbye is a fully time student at Frederick Community College. In her spare time, Bobbye is a volunteer firefighter at Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire Company and continues to volunteer her time to the 4-H program. In the future, Bobbye hopes to transfer to Virginia Polytechnic Institute where she plans to major in Agriculture Extension and Education.
Agriculture Student Council
The Agriculture Student council is a service group consisting of representatives from all agricultural clubs at the University of Maryland. Its purposes are to coordinate activities of the member clubs, to promote agricultural public relations, and to establish and develop interaction among students, faculty, administrators and alumni. In addition, the Ag Student council promotes the welfare and betterment of physical conditions and academic programs on campus for agricultural students.
There are 11 campus agricultural clubs represented in the Ag Student Council. Two representatives are elected to serve from each student club and officers of the Council are elected to 1-year terms from among these representatives. This year's Ag Student Council members are:
