Ag Day 1981

UMD AG DAY 1981

43rd Annual Ag Day

Dedication: Paul R. Poffenberger

The Agricultural Student Council takes great pride in dedicating the 43 rd Annual Ag Day program to Associate Dean Paul R. Poffenberger, who, on June 30, 1981, will be retiring from the University of Maryland after 50 years of dedicated service.

Dr. Poffenberger is a native of Hagerstown and currently resides with his wife, Gladys, in Montgomery County. He first came to the University of Maryland as a student in 1931. While an undergraduate here, he was an active member of Alpha Gamma Rho, Alpha Zeta, the Student Grange, the Livestock Club, played trumpet in the Band, and was Circulation Manager of the Diamondback. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Education in 1925, his Master’s Degree in Agricultural Economics in 1937, and went on to get his Ph.D. in Economics from American University in 1953. He taught Agricultural Economics between 1937 and 1943 and from 1943 to 1946 served as Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. After his military serves, he returned to continue teaching. He served as Department Head from 1955 to 1961, while serving concurrently as Assistant Dean for Instruction for the College of Agriculture, and Acting Head of Agriculture and Extension Education. Under his direction since that time, 3,689 students have received degrees from the College of Agriculture.

While at the University, he has served on countless committees and received many honors for his dedicated service to the University and the State of Maryland. His outstanding service and experience has enabled him to give testimony in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives in support of the budget for higher education in agriculture. He has appeared before many government committees and on several occasions he has met with Secretaries of Agriculture Freeman, Hardin, Butz and Bergland.

Dr. Poffenberger is also a dedicated family member and active in his community. His community service record includes active participating in Colesvilles Garden Club, the Epiphany Lutheran Church and the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital.

Dr. Poffenberger will be missed by many on this campus when he retires, but hopefully we have not really lost an important man, but shall come to depend on him in a different capacity, that as supportive alumni.
