Ag Day 1980

UMD AG DAY 1980

42nd Annual Ag Day

Dedication: Dr. E. C. Leffel

In dedicating the 1980 Ag Day program, the Agricultural Student council is honoring one of the outstanding individuals of the University of Maryland’s Department of animal Science. The 1980 Ag Day Program is dedicated to Dr. E.C. Leffel, head of the sheep program at the University of Maryland.

Dr. Leffel is a native of Pearisburg, Virginia. He holds a B.S. and M.S. degree in Animal Husbandry and a Ph.D. in Dairy Science. He instructed Dairy Science from Oct 1951 to Sept. 1952. From Sept. 1952 to Dec. 1952 he instructed Animal Husbandry. In 1953 he became an Assistant Professor in Animal Husbandry. In July 1958 he became an Associate Professor and in July 1968 he became a Professor in Animal Science. Dr. Leffel presently teaches Sheep Production and Feed & Feeding at the undergraduate level and courses in Energy Nutrition and Protein Nutrition at the graduate level. In addition to his classroom teaching, Dr. Leffel has shared his vast practical and theoretical knowledge of animal production to countless undergraduate and graduate students on an informal basis; in his office, in the halls, at the barns, or any other place that students might seek his well respected counsel. He has supported the Agricultural Student council when asked and has been the faculty advisor for a number of years.

He chaired the Maryland Nutrition Conference for Feed Manufacturers in 1967 and 1976. In 1975 he received the Outstanding Alumni Award for Excellence in Research. He has been honored with membership in Alpha Zeta, Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma XI and is an active alumni member of Alpha Gamma Rho. Dr. Leffel is a member of the American Society of Animal Science and has presented many scientific papers at meetings of the Society, and at its North Atlantic Section meetings and at the Maryland Nutrition Conference for feed manufacturers. He is also a member of the American Society of Dairy Science.

Dr. Leffel is a well respected professional in his field. Thus, Dr. Leffel is the complete professor; but above all else, a friend and mentor to all students.
